Jehovah shammah is one of the most unusual biblical names for God because it is actually the name of a city. However, the name still states one of the attributes of God—His presence with His people.
This name of the LORD expresses a deep truth about Him: the LORD delights to be wherever His people are. Throughout history, God has sought relationships with humans. God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. When they sinned, God instituted sacrifices so that relationships could be partly restored. Ezekiel prophesied a lot about God’s glorious presence with His people.1 The last words of His prophecy include this name of God. Ezekiel was speaking of the New Jerusalem, “the name of the city from that time on will be: the Lord is there [Jehovah shammah]” (Ezek. 48:35 NIV). Jesus promised that we would experience His presence wherever we go as His disciples (Matt. 28:20). The heavenly Jerusalem will be marked by the presence of God dwelling with His people as He has always longed to.2
