When the book of Revelation calls Jesus (Yeshua‘) the root and descendant of David, it states two things. Jesus certainly was descended from King David and had the title, Son of David. As David’s root, Jesus preceded David. David sprung forth from Jesus. The emphasis of this name of Jesus is Jesus as the source and purpose of David’s life. Jesus was one with God in creation, the Beginning of the creation of God.
Root and descendant of David in Greek:
Hē rhiza kai to genos Dauid
Strong’s Concordance numbers: 4491,1085, 1160b
Bible reference: Rev. 22:16
I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star. (Revelation 22:16)
The NIV and KJV call Jesus “the Root and the Offspring of David,” while the Message Bible has, “Root and Branch of David.”
A similar name of Jesus in Revelation is Root of David. In both Testaments, He is also called the Root of Jesse.
